Learning in the Junior School

At Oxley College Junior School, students are at the heart of everything we do, thriving in a nurturing environment where curiosity, creativity and excellence are celebrated. Our approach to learning fosters exploration, critical thinking and collaboration, ensuring every child feels supported and inspired in their educational journey.

Guided by our College values of showing courage, being kind and seeking wisdom, our teachers cultivate strong relationships grounded in respect and professionalism and ensure a safe, inclusive environment where students feel valued, parents are engaged and the school community thrives.

Our teachers are committed to student wellbeing and academic excellence. This foundation is reinforced by setting clear expectations, promoting teamwork and celebrating every learner as a unique individual.

At Oxley College's Junior School, we are big enough to cater yet small enough to care:

  • For our Pre-K program, families choose between a three-day or five-day week for their youngest students.
  • Between Kindergarten and Year 6, we have two classes per grade.

Development of character, care for the whole child and enlightened academic rigour are integral to our approach. Teachers at Oxley College Junior School set high expectations and ensure that every day counts.

Differentiated instruction, data-informed teaching, and organised, high-quality classroom displays create an environment conducive to learning. Quality feedback is essential, with clear learning intentions and success criteria, constructive guidance and feedback enabling students to set and achieve personal goals. Our teachers foster curiosity and resilience, leveraging inquiry-based learning to spark critical thinking and problem-solving.

Our evidence-based approach, inspired by Dr John Hattie’s research, emphasises understanding and enhancing the impact of teaching.

By utilising explicit teaching methods, such as the Gradual Release Model, we ensure a scaffolded learning experience that transitions responsibility from teachers to students. Inquiry-driven lessons and integrated learning opportunities inspire curiosity and offer experiences that challenge. Regular data analysis and collaboration among staff support informed decision-making and drive continual improvement.

At Oxley College, we prioritise Visible Learning, enabling students to understand their progress and empowering teachers to make meaningful contributions to the growth and success of our students.
