The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award at Oxley
The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award is a global, non-formal education framework providing opportunities for personal and social and development to all 14- to 25-year-olds; challenging young people to develop new skills, to be physically active, learn about teamwork and leadership through adventurous journey and volunteer within their community.
In the words of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award founder, HRH Prince Philip, it is a "do-it-yourself growing up kit" suggesting to young people that "there is more in you than you might think".
Oxley College has a long tradition in facilitating the Award and the framework links well to the Round Square ideals of Environmental Stewardship, Adventure, Leadership and Service.
A number of procedures are in place to assist students in working towards and completing the three levels of the Award, including opportunities for Community Service, Physical Recreation and the development of Skills. Adventurous Journeys run throughout the school year. These become progressively more challenging at each level and require participants to train, prepare and practice skills for assessment and qualification in bushwalking, canoeing, campcraft, navigation, individual and group management.
Students are invited to register for the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh’s Award at the end of Year 8, allowing time for a participant to complete their Gold Award early in Year 12 should they choose to do so. Students who have begun their Award at another school can easily transfer to the Oxley College Award Unit.
